February 2006
This month started up with more music for NASA. To the moon, Alice!
The following week the annual Grammy Awards were held in Los Angeles and Scott and Kolleen Mathews attended because of Scott’s rule: “If we are up – we show up.” This year Scott Mathews contributed his songwriting skills with co-writer Jimmy Pugh for Robert Cray’s release, ‘20’ which was nominated in the category of “Best Contemporary Blues”. Having already received the New York Times, Rolling Stone magazine (as well as several other publications) highest praises, the Grammy award itself wasn’t the real prize (which is good because it didn’t win!).
According to Scott, who has participated in Grammy Award winning projects since the mid-70’s, the real value of these events is celebrating (in high style) making music that becomes successful and seeing everyone in the industry in much better moods than they are ever found to be in their offices. This year’s highlights included walking the red carpet (which was actually green) and being stopped by all the fashion peeps to do interviews regarding Scott’s TikiTux. When answering the usual question, “Who are you wearing?” Scott Mathews came up with different fictitious names for each interviewer on the carpet. What Joan and Melissa don’t know is the Tux is actually a vintage ‘60’s number from the fine designers at ‘After 6’. The most outstanding musical moment came from Mary J. Blige and U2 doing a roof-raising “One” and the weirdest moment came from a giant yellow mohawk wig/hat wearing Sly Stone who was scheduled to do a 3 song medley and jumped off stage before the end of the first number. We waited nearly 30 years for nearly 30 seconds . . .
Upon returning to TikiTown, Scott Mathews met with the great film crew from Babblefish who conducted interviews in the studio and out on the company yacht. Johnny Jascot asked Scott the tough questions (none of which were fashion related) fresh from doing a Les Paul tribute at the Grammies. The results will become available for viewing soon.
